Detecting old versions
What I want to do is be able to detect if an older version of my app is installed and if it is to have the potion to uninstall it first.

Try to search for forum with filters, for example, - "older version uninstall" or "unistall before". I think you will find want you need. And you have good example in Examples folder - makensis.nsi (there are current version detection and previous version unistall in this script).
