Logging whilst silent

I've searched high and low and I can't seem to find a way to get the logger to log whilst silent. The above quote is the only indication that I've found that this is possible. How can I do it?
Presumeably there's something hardcoded to stop the installer from showing anything if the /S switch is passed at command line. How do I force it to display the instfiles page?
