How to close all interfering programs before installing new versions?

How do I automatically close all interfering programs before installing the new ones?

I'm currently using a pskill command, but I'm guessing there's a better way to do it?

Unfortunately, I've been unable to get ANY of them to work.

What I need to do, is to kill ALL msnmsgr processes.
