Is there a way to ping a URL.

After my installation completes I need to ping (or something like curl) a URL on my website. How can I do this? I do NOT want it to open a browser. It needs to be a silent call in the background.

You could probably use a download plugin for that. Simply delete the returned file after 'downloading'.
